Discovering the Joy of Baking

Updated: Mar 13, 2025

This winter has been especially cold, and while I wait for spring to start my garden, I’ve been spending more time in the kitchen. Baking has become a new passion of mine, though I’m still learning—and making plenty of mistakes along the way.

Recently, I attempted blueberry scones. I followed the recipe as best as I could (and made quite a bit of a mess), but the process was fun. I learned a few things along the way... such as... quickly realizing that the dough was a bit dry and difficult to handle but adding a bit more milk makes it more manageable. Also, adding frozen blueberries will help to keep them intact when rolling out the dough.

Despite my missteps, the scones still turned out delicious—golden brown, tender, and bursting with flavor. More importantly, I enjoyed the process. I know I won’t get everything perfect the initially, but that’s okay. Each mistake teaches me something new, and I’m excited to keep improving.

Baking, like gardening, requires patience and a willingness to learn. As I continue this journey, I look forward to experimenting with more recipes, embracing the challenges, and celebrating the small victories.

Rating (1-5 Scale)

When testing out a new recipe, I like to break it down into key factors to see how it measures up. Here’s how this one scored:

Was the recipe easy to understand?

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Yes

Was it simple to follow?

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Yes!

Did it take longer or shorter than expected?

⭐⭐⭐  It took a bit longer than expected and a few tries to get it right.

Was it worth making?

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Absolutely!

How would I tweak it?

Instead of heavy cream, I would use whole milk. My second batch turned out much better with milk, and I preferred the texture. I also used my stand mixer and added the butter to mix with the dry ingredients for a few seconds before incorporating the blueberries. This helped prevent too many blueberries from getting mushed up.

Have you tried this recipe? Let me know your thoughts and any tweaks you’d make!
